Michael Barnett's notes on meeting of 15th April for 22nd April meeting

Meeting Notes 15th April 2008.

 President Peter gave thanks.

He welcomed Gidley McCellagh to our club.

Brian Plain circulated the copy to be posted to the community on the ANTI Graffiti campaign.

Paul Le May advised that he needed another $65 to round the (Trailer) raffle profits to $5,000. This was subscribed during the meeting.

Dennis banked $3,184 from the Gordon Markets last Sunday, a good result considering the rain.

Barrie seeks helpers for Anzac Day coffee & bikkies at Turramurra Station.

PE Peter Lyons asked all attendees at the International Lunch on Sunday to wear “International Dress” or casual formal.

Nuli and Mark leave soon for Sierra Leone to review the Bo Project, sponsored by an RI grant.

Dennis needs a pair of 2 way radios, and a Dumpy Level for his trip with RAWCS to Vanuatu. Any offers?????

Milton advised that Julies 1 and 2 had arrived in Aceh and were tired, having met everyone. He believed they had sorted out the squat pan problem.

Sergeant Sandy “Went to Town”. Anniversaries, Birthdays, Sheila, John S, Brian P, Bobby, Sue, Peter etc. Male members for a female GG, AFL supporters, Tony & Denise for collusion, German families, Brian Plain for missing his raffle turn, Gidley for spilling his wine, Sheila for good news; another grand son, Andrew for bad news; a cheap new kitchen.

Heads & Tails was won by the club with two flicks of Sandy’s wrist.

Dennis introduced Gidley. Born in 1940, when his Father was working for CSR in Fiji. He studied Chemical Engineering at University in 1962, and worked at Wimera in Victoria for a while. Later he moved to the UK and worked with asbestos and was sometimes waist deep in the powder. It was considered a job hazard at the time. He returned to Australia and was a consultant in asbestos until he joined PA Consulting, after studying Accounting and Commerce. He later became a manager in the Plastics, Chain Saw, and Motor Bike industries (a real mixture) and then Industrial Marketing through computer-based training, and consulting to the energy industry etc. He is divorced, raised 2 kids and works with Life Line where he met PDG Pam Pritchard.

                                                GUEST SPEAKER

Roger Norman needed no introducing as our second vocational speaker.

Born in UK, Roger’s father was a banker who moved to Hobart. Roger followed in his father’s footsteps, and became a banker with the Commonwealth Bank, where he has been for the past 40 years. As a teller in the Castlereagh St. branch, he watched interesting characters coming out of the Mathew Talbot Hostel. A scheme to catch robbers by inserting green die bombs in bundles of notes often went wrong, with green die permeating the bank vaults. Kerry Packer used to come in each week to collect his betting money.

A move to the Wynyard Branch kept him busy, particularly during the lunch hour rush. Then to the Sydney Training Centre, and to becoming an examiner, which was still in the days of hand kept ledgers, with a little IT thrown in. Kalahan Staff College at St Ives was his next move, and he says it was one of the best jobs he had. (He was forced to play golf every second Wednesday.) Then Loans Manager NSW Southern Region, and back to Kalahan as a Research Officer. At one stage, he was asked to introduce his father, the GM of the Commonwealth Savings Bank, but it was decided it may appear as nepotism. One attendee at the college decided he was going mad, and counselling was offered. He then took a degree at UTS in training, and joined the CBFC, a subsidiary of the bank, where he operated in Risk Management. Roger enjoyed the everyday work and the varied experiences.

President Peter inducted into our Club Gidley McCellagh who was welcomed by all.

Raffle was won by PDG Pam, and scratchies by Barrie Heath and Sandy Facer.
